Welcome to Compass

About Compass

Compass: Young Carers began as a programme for Year 10 & Year 11 students with caring responsibilities in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. The programme ran physically for four years, aiming to raise aspirations and attainment in young carers, and make students aware of their post-16 options. Compass featured a number of workshops, with activities designed to build soft skills, increase confidence, dispel myths surrounding further and higher education, and give young carers to the tools to map out their education and career paths.

The programme was a huge success and received excellent feedback from our young carers, their families, schools, and local hubs. We have now decided to extend the reach of our support, by making our resources available to anyone who is interested in supporting young carers to achieve their full potential in school, home life and their futures.

This (free) tool-kit includes interactive activities, quizzes, lesson plans, information and links designed to not only help young carers to make informed decisions about their future education and careers, but give them the confidence to communicate and pursue these ideas.

Activities & Lesson Plans

Here you’ll find a range of downloadable activities, information sheets and lesson plans, and some online quizzes. Activities are grouped by theme and suggested lesson plans are provided, but all activities are designed to be flexible. They can be mixed-and-matched, used in lunchtime, after-school or weekend groups – or used at home!

I found that one of the best and most helpful sessions we had was a workshop on Communication Skills. We started of the session with some challenging and fun tongue twisters that we tried to complete in front of each other. Not only was this I really fun way to get everyone motivated for the session but also made everyone feel that it didn’t matter if we messed up because we were in a really supportive environment where no one would be judgemental, we then started working on assertiveness and the difference between being passive or aggressive. We were able to identify which category we fit into and all decided to set ourselves the challenge of becoming more assertive. We also looked at presentation skills and public speaking and by the end of the session we were all able to speak in front of one and other freely and with confidence. I found this session really did make a difference as communication skills are invaluable and apply to every aspect of life. After the session I found it easier to take part in discussions at both school and college, as well as in meetings and interviews in the work place.

There is a whole bunch of information for young carers on the internet, but it can be difficult to track it down and find the information you’re looking for.  Here we’ve compiled a list of just some of the different resources, information, charities and groups designed to support young carers. If you’re aware of any useful links and support that we haven’t listed, let us know through the contact page.
